"If you're lonely when you're alone, you're in bad company." - Jean-Paul Sartre.
How often have we heard the phrase “I’m bored?” As a parent, you may hear it often. Many kids want to be entertained and rely on their parents to provide entertainment. No, I take that back. Many of today’s children rely on their electronic devices to keep them busy.
Adults also declare boredom. It could be work that they find monotonous. They may be tired of the daily grind of life. Some can’t find anything they want to do, so they become “bored.”
I love the above quote. When alone, we feel lonely and often say we are bored and don’t think of anything to do. We frequently sit around feeling sorry for ourselves, and then that weird song children sang years ago sneaks into our heads.
Nobody likes me
Everybody hates me
I think I will eat some worms!!!
That behavior leads one to be lousy company to hang out with.
I can remember sitting alone at home, repeating that song over and over in my head. At some point, I realized I was expecting someone else to keep me occupied.
Believe it or not, boredom is a choice. I have purposely allowed myself to be bored and miserable. I wanted to feel sorry for myself, so I sat in front of the TV and stared at it ALL day, continually telling myself—I had nothing to do. I had plenty to do: clean the house, do laundry, go to the movies, call a friend, read a book, shop (bad idea), or go for a walk or ride.
Some boredom comes with having to do repetitive work. Many get to where they get bored in their job after a few years and find new ones that excite them more. Others have wanderlust and travel all over the world. Some of us stay home and find things enjoyable to do. (Blog, read, practice piano, watch a movie, or whatever makes you happy.)
So, what do we do when nothing sounds good to us? We find something to do even if we don’t want to, and it may give us a sense of accomplishment, and the boredom moves on. Again, I say, BOREDOM IS A CHOICE! There is always something we can do.
Here are ten things you can do when you're bored:
Learn Something New: Pick up a new hobby or skill, like cooking a new recipe, learning a musical instrument, or starting a new language.
Get Creative: Try drawing, painting, writing, or any other creative outlet that allows you to express yourself.
Organize Your Space: Tidy up a cluttered area of your home, like your closet, workspace, or kitchen. It can be satisfying and productive.
Exercise: Go for a walk, try a new workout routine, or practice yoga to keep your body active and your mind engaged.
Read or Listen to a Book: Dive into a good book or listen to an audiobook or podcast on a topic that interests you.
Watch Documentaries or Educational Videos: Explore documentaries or educational content online to learn about topics you’re curious about.
Connect with Someone: Call or video chat with a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while.
Explore a New Place: Visit a local park, museum, or neighborhood you haven't been to before.
Try a Puzzle or Brain Teaser: Engage your mind with a jigsaw puzzle, crossword, Sudoku, or any other brain game.
Meditate or Practice Mindfulness: Take time to relax and focus on breathing, which can help reduce stress and improve mood.
These activities can help you make the most of your time and turn boredom into an opportunity for growth and relaxation.
I encourage you to find something that brings you joy and prepare to do it when feeling bored.
Have a great week.
